Virginia Company took more than one hundred settlers to Jamestown colony in 1607. The aim of this was to increase the trade of England hence more profit to the company. The settlers were supposed to contribute to the financial position of the Virginia Company through sending it some trading commodities (Williamsburg, n.d).
The settlers were never happy with what they found in the colony as things did not turn out to be as easy they thought. No gold and gems were easily found as they had thought. The settlers were supposed to meet their own obligation as per the financial matters then improve the profitability level of Virginia Company. It thus became apparent that the settlers in the colony were struggling with the life they were not used to. Matters were complicated when the settlers faced disease problems and lack of food. After sometimes, more people were increased in the colony, but more ended up dying in the colony because of the problems they were facing (Williamsburg, n.d).
The company continued sending more people to the colony hoping to make more profits from the settlers. However, the mortality rate was so high that it made it impossible for the company to make any profits. The problem of the colony was changed in 1612 when tobacco growing was discovered to be a profitable venture. All the settlers thus concentrated on tobacco farming. It was decided that the population of Jamestown was to be increased as the only way of ensuring that the colonys profitability continued to increase (Williamsburg, n.d).
Tobacco venture continued to be profitable, but the Virginia Company still had several debts. There even broke a severe confrontation between the natives and the settlers, where many settlers were killed. The King, James I decided to make Virginia a royal colony which eased the tension and reduced the deaths.
The interaction between the settlers, the natives, and other communities had some advantages as well as disadvantages. As an advantage for example, the interaction between the Indians and the settlers led to the development of trade. The Indians provided the colony with food in exchange for beads, copper and iron implements (Feeley2006). Intermarriages between the natives and the settlers brought about peace and prosperity to the colony. Trade boosted the economy of the region to a very great extent. Some of the natives converted from their faith and adopted Christian faith after interactions with settlers. The arrival of the Africans played a very crucial role in the development of America. The Africans provided cheap labor in the settlers plantations (Beck, 2009). Increased interactions between the natives and the colonialist eventually led to mutual coexistence. The restriction of the Indians to the invasion of the whites allowed for their survival up to the present day. The interaction of the settlers, the natives and other ancient communities allowed for the sharing of ideas and knowledge. The artistic styles of the settlers added to the already rich history of the natives.
The settlers also learned the artistic styles of the natives (New World Folk Art, 1992).
The interactions however had many setbacks. For example, though the Indians traded with the settlers, they hated them due to their lack of respect to women. As a disadvantage to the natives, their political autonomy declined and shifted on to the hands of the settlers (Feeley2006). There were also a lot of cross-cultural conflicts as each community wanted to establish dominion over the others (Feeley, 2006).
